EDITOR'S NOTE: The second iteration of the Birmingham Stallions won the championship of the United States Football League on July 1. The new USFL is the latest in a long line of upstart football leagues to call the Magic City home in the last five decades. None has lasted longer than three seasons. From the mid-1960s to the late 1990s, Birmingham also at various times pursued a franchise in the National Football League, but was never able to land either an expansion team or a team relocated from another city.
